Veterans Serving Veterans
LRVC is comprised of local veterans and community leaders working to implement the Veteran-focused Together With veterans suicide prevention program in the Lakes Region.
Our Mission
Enlisting rural Veterans and their local partners to join forces to reduce Veteran suicide in our community
Our History
The Lakes Region Veterans Coalition follows the Together With Veterans (TWV) Rural Suicide Prevention Program funded by the VA Office of Rural Health and supported by the Office of Mental Health and Suicide Prevention. TWV’s guiding principles are Veteran-Driven, Collaborative, Evidence-Informed, and Community-Centered.
The Together With Veterans is a five-phase process to support rural communities in developing a local action plan to prevent Veteran suicide. The five Phases guide the community through identifying Veterans and other key partners; learning about suicide prevention and specific community strengths and needs; and developing and carrying out an effective local Veteran suicide prevention action plan.

Mobius Mobility manufactures and distributes the iBOT® Personal Mobility Device (“iBOT® PMD”), a breakthrough product for people with disabilities. The iBOT® PMD is a fully robotic, multi-modal mobility device that provides users with increased mobility and independence in rural, suburban and urban settings. In one device, iBOT® PMD users can climb curbs and stairs, traverse sand, snow, mud and other terrain, and interact with the world at eye level. Mobius Mobility is based in the historic millyard of Manchester, New Hampshire where it also manufactures the iBOT® PMD.
The Department of Veterans Affairs accepted a donation of 50 iBOT Personal Mobility Devices from Mobius Mobility LLC, May 27, 2021 to help Veterans with spinal cord injuries regain their autonomy. The iBOT PMD increases the user’s mobility by allowing them to independently elevate, interact at eye-level, climb stairs and cross various terrains.
As part of the “Operation Mobility Tour” kickoff, Acting VA Deputy Secretary of Veterans Affairs Carolyn Clancy, M.D. welcomed the first donation at the VA East Orange Medical Center from Dean Kamen, inventor of the iBOT PMD and president of DEKA Research and Development. An iBOT was donated to the center’s Spinal Cord Injuries/Disorders Center as well as the first Veteran recipient.
The iBOTs will be distributed to all 25 VA SCI/D clinics and another 24 iBOTs will be donated directly to Veterans — as appropriately determined by the local SCI/D clinic — based on need, a clinical assessment and prescription.
“Our goal is to deliver the mobility and independence our disabled Veterans deserve,” Kamen said. “It’s often said as a nation we are in debt to Veterans for their service and sacrifice. The best way to repay this debt is to deliver advanced technology that enables them to live life on their own terms and to be as healthy and independent as possible.”

Addiction Resources for Veterans
When the brave and selfless heroes from our armed forces return home, unforeseen difficulties often present themselves as they try to readjust to life stateside. The way many individuals attempt to mask their struggles is by abusing drugs and alcohol. While this is a relatively common practice, it can be an unhealthy way to manage the stress and pressure of post-war life. Drug and alcohol abuse can easily turn into a life-threatening addiction. If you feel drugs are now controlling the decisions in your life, it is time to seek help.
Veterans Drug and Alcohol Abuse
Nearly 40% of veterans who have returned home from Iraq and Afghanistan struggle with drug or alcohol abuse, according to the National Veterans Foundation. Like much of the civilian population, veterans are also susceptible to the rising opioid crisis. Roughly a third of reported opioid abuse within the service members’ and veterans’ communities are by individuals who suffered an injury during war. This number increases to nearly 60% with heroin use.
Drug and alcohol abuse among veterans can make life far more complicated and difficult than it needs to be. Once people begin to depend upon these substances, they usually start having other issues, such as homelessness, unemployment and criminal activity. While alcohol remains the most common form of abuse, illicit and prescription drug abuse is on the rise. You may have made it through a global war abroad; however, your own personal battle may just be beginning at home when you allow substance abuse to take hold of your life.
Getting the Help You Need
Addiction resources are widely available for veterans with dependency and substance abuse concerns. You can choose to go through the military, the government or a private solution like with Granite Recovery Centers. Whichever type of treatment you choose, the most important step is to make the call to a recovery center today to begin changing your life for the better tomorrow.
